Project 11-Mounting An Exhibition (Scale)

Finally, it is time to exhibit all our work. I have done 10 projects since we entered school of HBP. I felt a relief because it was the last project that we do to exhibit all the previous work that we have done for RUS 104. For the project, we were asked to produce a A1-size board to accommodate all the pictures of our projects with a creative photos arrangement. Moreover, we had to produce a portfolio with some graphic values to accommodate all the hard copy of the previous projects.


Although the job seems very easy, I had spent lots of time designing and making the boards and portfolio. Besides that, we had to go to the studios to set up our individual and group booth for exhibition, table arrangement and cleaning. It required the team work of all the students.


In addition, QS and CM students need to make a arrangement with the caterer to prepare food on the exhibition day. The architecture students were busy designing and making banners whereas the interior design students were busy with the spatial design of the exhibition studios. Every students have their own work and I was happy that everyone was keen on the exhibition.


Finally, the lecturers and seniors came and visited our exhibition and every things run smoothly that day.

Project 10-Community Facility (View)

An academic visit to Malacca was organised during project 10. The project aimed to train our visual observations and do visual records such as sketching when we are doing a site analysis.

Malacca is my hometown and I felt excited and happy during the trip heading to Malacca. We were arranged to sit in three buses based on our gender. That's the reason I could not get the chance to sit and talk to my friends. Hence, I ended up sitting with a famous Malay guy called Boboi. I had already known him because he was my group member.

However, it was fun sitting with all the Malay friends.They were fun and we had had lots of jokes about our lecturers and study life at USM. Furthermore, the ride to Malacca took nearly 11 hours. I had never had such a long ride to Malacca. However, it may due to the safety of the students. We stopped at three resting stations during the journey.

The first day in Malacca was to visit all sorts of museums available in the World Heritage Zone of Malacca such as the Stadhuys Complex, Stamp Museum, A'Famosa fortress and St's Paul Hill Church. It was fun learning and lookng at so many artifacts and the Dutch houses which were built during the colonisation of the Dutch. Moreover, we went to the astronomy center located in Tanjung Bidara. At night, the officer was giving a talk on how to identify and recognise direction and stars at the balcony of the building. To me, it was a new and nice experience to me to listen to a talk with friends at balcony at night.

The second day. We were brought to the Dataran Shopping mall to buy some souvenirs or shop for somethings we need. Besides, I led my friends to a tourists-must visit destination in Malacca- Jonker Street where they can taste the local delicacy, food and see Baba-Nyonya culture. Next, we also had the chance to get on the Menara Taming Sari which has a height of 100 meters. The tower offered us the bird eyes' view of Malacca city and I found that Malacca was truly a beautiful place.

Then, it is river cruising time. The night scenario along the Malacca river was damn attracting and wonderful. I can see the night life of Malacca city- harmonious, quite and warm. The spotlights with different colours have lighten up the Malacca river where we can see bridges, cafe, houses and some beautiful scenarios along the river.

On the last day, we visited the Malacca Furniture House and Malay traditional house before departing to USM. To me, it was a joyful and memorable trip to me.

Project 9-Integrated Project( Angle)

Project 9 was the last group work. The project was quite tough. We were required to design and make a scaled-down model of a free standing pavilion of USM. The pavilion will function as a information center for visitors or prospective students of USM.


It was like doing a real project which we need to take the measurements, estimate the cost and do site analysis. Furthermore, we had to prepare at least 2 A1 size boards with graphics that shows the location and concepts of our pavilion.


Our tutor Dr. Naser is a very nice and caring tutor. He has provided us with lots of guidance and asked a PhD student to give us a brief on design a building. I was so fascinated with his talk and I didn't feel bored at all. Although designing may be very dreadful to some people, I started to like design things after listening to his talk.


However, the concepts of my group have been banned or rejected two times because the comments for the first model is too complex whereas the second one is too simple. Hence, we had no sufficient times to do the third model. We only had two days to complete the model and boards for the third design.


Hence, we were doing the project non-stop within that two days trying to do the best model among other groups. Moreover, BS and BT students were trying to implement some technological appliances into the building to make it more convenient for the residents and less pollution to the environment. It broaden my horizon on construction as there are actually many aspects to consider when doing a project. 


The title of our model is "The Gua". "The Gua" is a pavilion that looks like a terrace houses. There were five rooms with different sizes connected to each other with a slanting roof which can collect and deliver the rainwater into the lake located in front of the pavilion. The rainwater can be reused to flush toilets, cleaning and watering the plants around the pavilion. Moreover, there was a tree inside the sitting room where the visitors and rest and enjoy a green scenery in the sitting area.

Project 8-Object Connection(Jointing)

In the project 8, each of the students was required to produce a doodle in a jigsaw puzzle by using our name. The aim of the project is to reiterate the importance of connectivity with other team mates in a project. Leila was the class captain and she coordinated the puzzle position of each students.


Besides that, we had to communicate and work with the students whose puzzles that were connected to our own puzzle. I saw some students produce puzzles with rainbow background colour. For me, I and my neighbors used white as background colour and we combined our design in the puzzles.

Project 7- Analysis of GTWH Buildings(Presentation)

Hi.


Project 7 was the first project work tha of a building required us to work in a team with students from different disciplines to produce a site analysis on the GTWH buildings in the core and buffer zone of George Town.


First, we would have to decide the heritage buildings that we were gonna visit and we went to George Town by bus. I was happy that most of the teamates were commited and went to do the site analysis together.


The heritage buildings that we conducted site analysis were Yeng Keng Hotel, Penaga Hotel and Cheong Fatt Tze's mansion. We collected data from various aspects such as the architectual, drainage system, materials, ornaments and vegetation of the heritage buildings. We took photos, getting the brochures and also jot down any necessary information to us.


Unfortunately, we could not conduct a thorough analysis on Penaga hotel because we did not get any previous permission before visiting the building. Moreover, we had to pay to visit the blue mansion and we were not allowed to take any photos in the mansion. That made our site analysis difficult.

Next. we had to produce a graphic presentation of a size of 4 A1 mounting boards with the data we collected. We distributed the jobs based on the expertise of each member. Some members were good at painting, part of them is at drawing and so on. Hence we could produce a higher quality work efficiently and at the same time we could learned from each other. It was fun doing the boards although we had to stay at the studio until very late. I think it's worth it because I learned lots of things from each member.

Feedback from lecturers:

I learned the ways to produce an integrated graphic presentation board after listening the heed from the lecturers, especially Mr. Roslan. Most of our presentation boards were lack of site analysis data due to some reasons. In order to produce an integration work, we must plan and coordinate every aspects of the data and photos. For example, the coordination of the background colour, the size of the words, the perspective view of the buildings and other information as well.

Project 6- Analysis of HBP spaces( Composition)

I think I have got used to the RUS 104 project work and I felt excited when I got the assignment because the studio master did not set a lot of formats and guides on the project. Hence, I can use my own way and ideas to translate the information or words into attractive graphic communication. 


Besides, HBP lecturers were caring and helpful. I recall that I went to HBP resource centre after the tutorial. At the minute I stepped into the centre, I saw Dr. Mazlan and Dr. Azree were there and ready to give a helping hand to us. They provided us the keyplan,location plan and site plan. Furthermore, we were taught on how to get useful information from the web and the correct ways to compose and colour the site analysis. Moreover, Dr.Mazlan even lent me his graphic design book to us for our reference. I felt grateful that the HBP lecturers are kind and caring.

I started my work on the first day because I thought the better the earlier. So that I can have time for myself to enjoy my favourite activities like playing basketball and reading. However, it's quite tough for this week because we all have to prepare for the examination of environmental science as well.

I tried to sketch colour my first draft and I found my water colour colouring skill is awful. Therefore, I changed my strategic and bought a new set of watercolour pencils to assist me in the colouring.

The aim of my site analysis is to provide information to prospective students who are going to study at HBP of USM. The site analysis provide information of the location  and climatic data of HBP, University Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang. Next, the introduction of HBP and history of USM are provided so that the students can understand and know more. Lastly and most importantly, the study pathway of school of HBP is also provided in flow chart so that the students know the flow of study from the pre-U level to Ph.D level. In that case, They may know and plan their study pathway well for their bright future.

In terms of colouring, I left a large space of white space in order to attract people's attention. Besides, I used a lots of bright and harmony colour so that the site analysis is pleasing and comfortable to people's eyes.

Thanks to the reference from the graphic books, I faced little problems in the composing of the site analysis and I completed the project quite early. I completed it on last Saturday.


I am happy that I have put all my efforts in the project. I am looking forward for the next project and I think I can form a great team with my new teamates. I would like to thank all the lecturers for their hard work.

Project 5- The Mask( Speculative)

Hi. I am going to introduce and give some detailed information on the process of making the mask and the feeling of my mask.


This weekends were tough for HBP students because we had to take part in the orientation week and complete the project 5 brilliantly at the same time. My room mate was not a HBP student. Hence, I teamed up with a few good friends who are from RESTU. I have walked from Fajar Harapan to Restu for the past two nights for the sake of the project 5.


I and my teammates went to Tesco to buy some materials like tissue papers, A4 paper, flour and colour. We did not use white glue. Instead we used a more eco-friendly method that we made our own glue by mixing "tepung ubi kayu" with hot water.


It was a great fun working with the teammates. At first, we gathered lots of information on the process of making a good paper mache mask. Then, we started doing "facial treatment" for our friends when we stared putting on tissue on friends's faces and started glueing them. Haha. The A4 paper were torn into smaller pieces then we glue the mask for several layers of papers so that the mask will not collapse.

 I was anxiously waiting for my "facial treatment". Haha

 Haha. Mine is done finally. Victory!

Next, I had to figure out what I was going to paint on the mask to show its feeling and make it look more attractive. I surfed the internet and hear the heed from my friends. Finally, I decided to make a mask that looks happy and calm because I am always positive. 


I DECIDED TO MAKE A MASK THAT LOOK CONTENDED AND RELAXED WHEN ENTERING A HAPPY SPACE LIKE ENTERING A WELL-ORGANISED AND DECORATED MASK PARTY .


I sketched the masquerade mask pattern on my mask before painting. I chose red and yellow colour as my major colours because red symbolises energy and passion whereas yellow represents warmth and happiness.

In addition, the project 5 has also inproved the relationship between me and my friends. It requires us to work in a team and help each other. Moreover, we also went for supper or a short break when we are tired of doing the project.

To conclude, it was a fun project where I have learned a lot from lecturer and friends like the ways to identify and draw the facial expressions that shows different feelings . At the same time it has also improve the interaction of the students because I met and knew new friends.
